The Kuang Sii Falls, known as Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls is located south of Luang Prabang and should absolutely be on your must see list when visiting Luang Prabang. The falls sit in shallow pools on a steep hillside and then lead down to a huge fall of 60 meters. There is a small fee charged by the locals to visit the falls but it is well worth it and most of the pools are open for swimming – apart from one which is a sacred site.
The falls are the largest waterfalls in Luang Prabang and are truly amazing to visit.
To visit Kuang Sii Falls there are a variety of options including a tuk tuk, private minibus or even cycling. I chose to do a 1 day tour that included some trekking. The trek takes you through the Lao hinterland going through amazing rice fields before reaching the mountains that involved a few steep climbs and an interesting cave. Arriving at the Kuang Sii Falls was a truly welcome sight after our trek and we were very happy to engage in a nice cool relaxing swim.
While at the Kuang Si Waterfall Sanctuary you can visit the Asian Bear Protection Project. The project is set up to help and protect bears who have been poached. The project welcomes donations to help care for the bears or you can buy T-shirts.
When in the sanctuary you will notice how well maintained the area is. There are wooden huts to change in, picnic benches to your lunch and the area is well shaded cool. There are also walkways and bridges set up to guide visitors around.
I can see why these beautiful falls are a favorite place to visit to escape from the heat during the day for a cool dip but there is much more to Kuang Sii then the falls and I recommend locking in a full day as part of your Laos Holiday to enjoy the ambience and general relaxation that comes with visiting this area.
