It is easy to see why Luang Prabang is called ‘the Jewel of Laos’. As soon as you enter this wonderland of activity you are greeted with beautiful flowers, luscious overgrown trees on the river banks and the hustle and bustle of the city life filled with locals and monks all going about their daily business.
There is plenty of accommodation in Luang Prabang to choose from so it is easy to get what you want for your budget. Everything is negotiable to so you can sometimes get a few bucks off the quoted price.
Travel in Laos is so much fun, with so many sites to see from the famous temples to waterfalls. I am going to tell you of my amazing experiences I had all in one day.
First stop was the Wat Xieng Thong which is the most important temple in the country they say. I decided to do the sunrise tour as it was recommended to me by friends on their Laos holiday. The temples are very old but also very magical, set in a beautiful garden on the Mekong River. They were built in 1560 by King Setthathhirat. It is quite amazing to hear about the history of these temples. Unfortunately the temples had to be remodeled in the 1960’ as the force of nature and time had taken their time. The workmanship that has gone into them is nothing but spectacular. I spent an hour at these temples before heading off for a Laos tour of the waterfalls.
Tad Thong Waterfalls would have to be my favorite Laos tour so far. If you are feeling adventurous then I recommend hiring a bike, it only took us about 30 minutes and the ride was fairly easy although hot (take a water bottle!) but was quite scenic. The trail to them was quite well maintained to which made the walk easier. A great reward at the end was definitely seeing these waterfalls.
There is a restaurant near these waterfalls that is run by an English guy who is really helpful in giving you information about the area. The food was great and a cold beer at the end of the day even better!
After this big day I wanted nothing more than to head back to my accommodation in Luang Prabang, have a shower and chill out with a cold beer!! It was a very adventurous day, lots of walking and riding but I wouldn’t change a thing!! I took so many fantastic photos and have great memories I will always hold onto from my travel experience in Laos.
Stay tuned for my next blog where I take a Laos cruise……………..
